East Coast fever (theileriosis) is an animal disease in Africa caused by the protozoan parasite "Theileria parva". It excludes diseases caused by other "Theileria"
Several species of rickettsia bacteria cause anaplasmosis in ruminants:
- Cattle:
- "Anaplasma marginale" - found worldwide.
- "Anaplasma centrale" - found mainly in South America, Africa and the Middle East.
- Sheep and goats:
- "Anaplasma ovis" - found worldwide.
Vaccines against anaplasmosis are available. Carrier animals should be eliminated from flocks. Tick control may also be useful although it can be difficult to implement.
One study using the medicinal plant "Peganum harmala" showed it to have a lifesaving effect on cattle infected with East Coast fever.
The classical treatment with tetracyclines (1970–1990) cannot provide efficiency more than 50%.
Since the early 1990s, buparvaquone is used in bovine theileriosis with remarkable results (90 to 98% recovery).
Other than the buparvaquones, other chemotherapeutic options are the parvaquones, e.g. Clexon. Halofuginone lactate has also been shown to have an 80.5% efficacy against "Theirelia parva parva" infections. The ultimate factor that causes death is pulmonary edema.
In May 2010, a vaccine to protect cattle against East Coast fever reportedly had been approved and registered by the governments of Kenya, Malawi and Tanzania. This consists of cryopreserved sporozoites from crushed ticks, but it is expensive and can cause disease.
Control of the disease relies on control of ticks of domestic animals, particularly disease-resistant ticks. This is a major concern in tropical countries with large livestock populations, especially in the endemic area. Pesticides (acaricides) are applied in dipping baths or spray races, and cattle breeds with good ability to acquire immune resistance to the vector ticks are used.
"Babesia" species are in the phylum Apicomplexa, which also has the protozoan parasites that cause malaria, toxoplasmosis, and cryptosporidiosis. Four clades of "Babesia" species infect humans. The main species in each clade are:
1. "B. microti" (<3 µm)
2. "B. duncani"
3. "B. divergens" (cattle parasite seen mostly in Europe) and "B. venatorum" (roe deer parasite, formerly called EU1), most closely related to the large "Babesia" clade
4. Large" Babesia" (>3 µm) mostly infects ungulates, but also includes K01 strain (an isolated case observed in South Korea, see isolated cases)
Babesiosis is a malaria-like parasitic disease caused by infection with "Babesia", a genus of Apicomplexa. Human babesiosis is an uncommon but emerging disease in the Northeastern and Midwestern United States and parts of Europe, and sporadic throughout the rest of the world. It occurs in warm weather. Ticks transmit the human strain of babesiosis, so it often presents with other tick-borne illnesses such as Lyme disease. After trypanosomes, "Babesia" is thought to be the second-most common blood parasite of mammals, and they can have a major impact on health of domestic animals in areas without severe winters. In cattle, a major host, the disease is known as Texas cattle fever, redwater, or piroplasmosis.
A tick infestation is a condition where a tick acts as an ectoparasite.
It is sometimes thought of as an animal disease. In humans, the primary concern from tick bites is often not the ectoparasitism itself, but the potential for the tick to transmit disease or tick paralysis. Still, in certain populations, it is possible for tick infestation to be clinically significant.
There is some evidence that "Ixodes ricinus" infected with "Borrelia burgdorferi" may become more efficient at infestation.
Home remedies (such as vaseline or matches) have been used in the past, but are not currently recommended.
Ehrlichiosis is a nationally notifiable disease in the United States. There have been cases reported in every month of the year, but most cases are reported during April–September. These months are also the peak months for tick activity in the United States.
From 2008-2012, the average yearly incidence of ehrlichiosis was 3.2 cases per million persons. This is more than twice the estimated incidence for the years 2000-2007. The incidence rate increases with age, with the ages of 60–69 years being the highest age-specific years. Children of less than 10 years and adults aged 70 years and older, have the highest case-fatality rates. There is a documented higher risk of death among persons who are immunosuppressed.
For a person or companion animal to acquire a tick-borne disease requires that that individual gets bitten by a tick and that that tick feeds for a sufficient period of time. The feeding time required to transmit pathogens differs for different ticks and different pathogens. Transmission of the bacterium that causes Lyme disease is well understood to require a substantial feeding period.
For an individual to acquire infection, the feeding tick must also be infected. Not all ticks are infected. In most places in the US, 30-50% of deer ticks will be infected with "Borrelia burgdorferi" (the agent of Lyme disease). Other pathogens are much more rare. Ticks can be tested for infection using a highly specific and sensitive qPCR procedure. Several commercial labs provide this service to individuals for a fee. The Laboratory of Medical Zoology (LMZ), a nonprofit lab at the University of Massachusetts, provides a comprehensive TickReport for a variety of human pathogens and makes the data available to the public. Those wishing to know the incidence of tick-borne diseases in their town or state can search the LMZ surveillance database.
Ticks tend to be more active during warmer months, though this varies by geographic region and climate. Areas with woods, bushes, high grass, or leaf litter are likely to have more ticks. Those bitten commonly experience symptoms such as body aches, fever, fatigue, joint pain, or rashes. People can limit their exposure to tick bites by wearing light-colored clothing (including pants and long sleeves), using insect repellent with 20%–30% DEET, tucking their pants legs into their socks, checking for ticks frequently, and washing and drying their clothing (in a hot dryer).
Rocky Mountain spotted fever, like all rickettsial infections, is classified as a zoonosis. Zoonoses are diseases of animals that can be transmitted to humans. Some zoonotic diseases require a vector (e.g., a mosquito, tick, or flea) to be transmitted from the animal host to the human host. In the case of Rocky Mountain spotted fever, ticks are the natural hosts, serving as both reservoirs and vectors of "R. rickettsii". Ticks transmit the organism to vertebrates primarily by their bites. Less commonly, infections may occur following exposure to crushed tick tissues, fluids, or tick feces.
A female tick can transmit "R. rickettsii" to her eggs in a process called transovarial transmission. Ticks can also become infected with "R. rickettsii" while feeding on blood from the host in either the larval or nymphal stage. After the tick develops into the next stage, the "R. rickettsii" may be transmitted to the second host during the feeding process. Furthermore, male ticks may transfer "R. rickettsii" to female ticks through body fluids or spermatozoa during the mating process. These types of transmission represent how generations or life stages of infected ticks are maintained. Once infected, the tick can carry the pathogen for life.
Rickettsiae are transmitted to a vertebrate host through saliva while a tick is feeding. It usually takes about 24 hours of attachment and feeding before the rickettsiae are transmitted to the host. In general, about one to three percent of the tick population carries "R. rickettsii", even in areas where the majority of human cases are reported. Therefore, the risk of exposure to a tick carrying "R. rickettsii" is low.
Vectors include the American dog tick "Dermacentor variabilis", "Dermacentor andersoni", "Rhipicephalus sanguineus", and "Amblyomma cajennense". Not all of these are of equal importance, and most are restricted to certain geographic areas.
The two major vectors of "R. rickettsii" in the United States are the American dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis) and the Rocky Mountain wood tick (Dermacentor andersoni). American dog ticks are widely distributed east of the Rocky Mountains and they also occur in limited areas along the Pacific Coast. Dogs and medium-sized mammals are the preferred hosts of an adult American dog ticks, although it feeds readily on other large mammals, including human beings. This tick is the most commonly identified species responsible for transmitting "R. rickettsii" to humans. Rocky Mountain wood ticks ("Dermacentor andersoni") are found in the Rocky Mountain states and in southwestern Canada. The life cycle of this tick may require up to three years for its completion. The adult ticks feed primarily on large mammals. The larvae and nymphs feed on small rodents.
Other tick species have been shown to be naturally infected with "R. rickettsii" or serve as experimental vectors in the laboratory. These species are likely to play only a minor role in the ecology of "R. rickettsii".
Tick control is the most effective method of prevention, but tetracycline at a lower dose can be given daily for 200 days during the tick season in endemic regions.
To avoid tick bites and infection, experts advise:
- Avoid tick-infested areas, especially during the warmer months.
- Wear light-colored clothing so ticks can be easily seen. Wear a long sleeved shirt, hat, long pants, and tuck pant legs into socks.
- Walk in the center of trails to avoid overhanging grass and brush.
- Clothing and body parts should be checked every few hours for ticks when spending time outdoors in tick-infested areas. Ticks are most often found on the thigh, arms, underarms, and legs. Ticks can be very small (no bigger than a pinhead). Look carefully for new "freckles".
- The use of insect repellents containing DEET on skin or permethrin on clothing can be effective. Follow the directions on the container and wash off repellents when going indoors.
- Remove attached ticks immediately.
Contracting the CTF virus is thought to provide long-lasting immunity against reinfection. However, it is always wise to be on the safe side and try to prevent tick bites.
Doxycycline and minocycline are the medications of choice. For people allergic to antibiotics of the tetracycline class, rifampin is an alternative. Early clinical experience suggested that chloramphenicol may also be effective, however, in vitro susceptibility testing revealed resistance.
Ticks should be removed promptly and carefully with tweezers and by applying gentle, steady traction. The tick's body should not be crushed when it is removed and the tweezers should be placed as close to the skin as possible to avoid leaving tick mouthparts in the skin; mouthparts left in the skin can allow secondary infections. Ticks should not be removed with bare hands. Hands should be protected by gloves and/or tissues and thoroughly washed with soap and water after the removal process.
A match or flame should not be used to remove a tick. This method, once thought safe, can cause the tick to regurgitate, expelling any disease it may be carrying into the bite wound.
Ehrlichiosis (; also known as canine rickettsiosis, canine hemorrhagic fever, canine typhus, tracker dog disease, and tropical canine pancytopenia is a tick-borne disease of dogs usually caused by the organism "Ehrlichia canis". "Ehrlichia canis" is the pathogen of animals. Humans can become infected by "E. canis" and other species after tick exposure. German Shepherd Dogs are thought to be susceptible to a particularly severe form of the disease, other breeds generally have milder clinical signs. Cats can also be infected.
A robovirus is a zoonotic virus that is transmitted by a rodent vector (i.e., "ro"dent "bo"rne).
Roboviruses mainly belong to the Arenaviridae and Hantaviridae family of viruses. Like arbovirus ("ar"thropod "bo"rne) and tibovirus ("ti"ck "bo"rne) the name refers to its method of transmission, known as its vector. This is distinguished from a clade, which groups around a common ancestor. Some scientists now refer to arbovirus and robovirus together with the term ArboRobo-virus.
Rocky Mountain spotted fever can be a very severe illness and patients often require hospitalization. Because "R. rickettsii" infects the cells lining blood vessels throughout the body, severe manifestations of this disease may involve the respiratory system, central nervous system, gastrointestinal system, or kidneys.
Long-term health problems following acute Rocky Mountain spotted fever infection include partial paralysis of the lower extremities, gangrene requiring amputation of fingers, toes, or arms or legs, hearing loss, loss of bowel or bladder control, movement disorders, and language disorders. These complications are most frequent in persons recovering from severe, life-threatening disease, often following lengthy hospitalizations
Prevention of ATBF centers around protecting oneself from tick bites by wearing long pants and shirt, and using insecticides like DEET on the skin. Travelers to rural areas in Africa and the West Indies should be aware that they may come in contact with ATBF tick vectors. Infection is more likely to occur in people who are traveling to rural areas or plan to spend time participating in outdoor activities. Extra caution should be taken in November - April, when "Amblyomma" ticks are more active. Inspection of the body, clothing, gear, and any pets after time outdoors can help to identify and remove ticks early.
"A. phagocytophilum" is transmitted to humans by "Ixodes" ticks. These ticks are found in the US, Europe, and Asia. In the US, "I. scapularis" is the tick vector in the East and Midwest states, and "I. pacificus" in the Pacific Northwest. In Europe, the "I. ricinus" is the main tick vector, and "I. persulcatus" is the currently known tick vector in Asia.
The major mammalian reservoir for "A. phagocytophilum" in the eastern United States is the white-footed mouse, "Peromyscus leucopus". Although white-tailed deer and other small mammals harbor "A. phagocytophilum", evidence suggests that they are not a reservoir for the strains that cause HGA. A tick that has a blood meal from an infected reservoir becomes infected themselves. If an infected tick then latches onto a human the disease is then transmitted to the human host and "A." "phagocytophilum" symptoms can arise.
"Anaplasma phagocytophilum" shares its tick vector with other human pathogens, and about 10% of patients with HGA show serologic evidence of coinfection with Lyme disease, babesiosis, or tick-borne meningoencephalitis.
About 14 million people, mainly children, are treated annually for head lice in the United States alone. Only a small proportion of those treated, however, may have objective evidence of an extant infestation. High levels of louse infestations have also been reported from all over the world including Denmark, Sweden, U.K., France and Australia.
Normally head lice infest a new host only by close contact between individuals, making social contacts among children and parent child interactions more likely routes of infestation than shared combs, brushes, towels, clothing, beds or closets. Head-to-head contact is by far the most common route of lice transmission.
The United Kingdom's National Health Service, and many American health agencies, report that lice "prefer" clean hair, because it's easier to attach eggs and to cling to the strands.
Head lice ("Pediculus humanus capitis") are not known to be vectors of diseases, unlike body lice ("Pediculus humanus humanus"), which are known vectors of epidemic or louse-borne typhus ("Rickettsia prowazekii"), trench fever ("Rochalimaea quintana") and louse-borne relapsing fever ("Borrelia recurrentis").
By one author's count, 257 human cases of "Thelazia callipaeda" had been reported worldwide by the year 2000, though thelaziasis is still considered to be a rare disease.
Various livestock and wildlife surveys suggest that thelaziasis is quite common among animals.
- A slaughterhouse survey in Canada found that about one-third (32%) of cattle over an 8-month period were infested with eyeworms.
- A survey of horses in Kentucky revealed a 42% rate of infestation with "Thelazia lacrymalis".
- In Wyoming and Utah, a survey of hunter-harvested mule deer found 15% to be infested by "Thelazia californiensis".
- A survey of various sites in Italy found 23-60% of dogs, 5% of foxes and 4 out of 4 cats to be infested with "Thelazia callipaeda".
Mammals can get parasites from contaminated food or water, bug bites, or sexual contact. Ingestion of contaminated water can produce Giardia infections.
Parasites normally enter the body through the skin or mouth. Close contact with pets can lead to parasite infestation as dogs and cats are host to many parasites.
Other risks that can lead people to acquire parasites are walking barefeet, inadequate disposal of feces, lack of hygiene, close contact with someone carrying specific parasites, and eating undercooked foods, unwashed fruits and vegetables or foods from contaminated regions.
Parasites can also be transferred to their host by the bite of an insect vector, i.e. mosquito, bed bug, fleas.
Cytauxzoon felis is a protozoal organism transmitted to domestic cats by tick bites, and whose natural reservoir host is the bobcat. "C. felis" has been found in other wild felid species such as Florida bobcat, eastern bobcat, Texas cougar, and a white tiger in captivity. "C. felis" infection is limited to the family felidae which means that "C. felis" poses no zoonotic (transmission to humans) risk or agricultural (transmission to farm animals) risk. Until recently it was believed that after infection with "C. felis", pet cats almost always died. As awareness of "C. felis" has increased it has been found that treatment is not always futile. More cats have been shown to survive the infection than was previously thought. New treatments offer as much as 60% survival rate.
Body lice are spread through prolonged direct physical contact with a person who has them or through contact with articles such as clothing, beds, bed linens, or towels that have been in contact with an infested person. In the United States, body lice infestations are rare, typically found mainly in homeless transient populations who do not have access to bathing and regular changes of clean clothes. Infestation is unlikely to persist on anyone who bathes regularly and who has at least weekly access to freshly laundered clothing and bedding.
Although louse-borne (epidemic) typhus is no longer widespread, outbreaks of this disease still occur during times of war, civil unrest, natural or man-made disasters, and in prisons where people live together in unsanitary conditions. Louse-borne typhus still exists in places where climate, chronic poverty, and social customs or war and social upheaval prevent regular changes and laundering of clothing.
