The cause of PVS is unknown; however, genetic factors and nutritional deficiencies may play a role. It is more common in women, particularly in middle age (peak age is over 50). In these patients, esophageal squamous cell carcinoma risk is increased; therefore, it is considered a premalignant process.
The condition is associated with koilonychia, glossitis, inflammation of the lips (cheilitis), and splenomegaly.
Esophageal web in Plummer-Vinson syndrome is found at upper end of esophagus(post cricoid region) and Schatzki ring may be found at the lower end of esophagus.
There is risk of perforation of the esophagus with the use of dilators for treatment. Furthermore, it is one of the risk factors for developing squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity, esophagus, and hypopharynx.
GSE can result in high risk pregnancies and infertility. Some infertile women have GSE and iron deficiency anemia others have zinc deficiency and birth defects may be attributed to folic acid deficiencies.
It has also been found to be a rare cause of amenorrhea.
Fibromyalgia was found in 9% of adult patients relative to 0.03% in the general population with a link common to IBD. Concurrent IBS is found in 30% to 70%. Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth is associated is common with a transient response to antimicrobial therapy.
Not to be confused with Rosenthal syndrome a.k.a hemophilia C which is caused by clotting factor XI deficiency. Only genetic causation is established as it is associated with twins and family members.
Melkersson–Rosenthal syndrome may recur intermittently after its first appearance. It can become a chronic disorder. Follow-up care should exclude the development of Crohn's disease or sarcoidosis.
Many conditions can cause glossitis via malnutrition or malabsorption, which creates the nutritional deficiencies described above, although other mechanisms may be involved in some of those conditions listed.

- Allergic reaction to toothpaste, mouthwash, breath fresheners, dyes in confectionery, plastic in dentures or retainers, or certain blood-pressure medications (ACE inhibitors)
- Administration of ganglion blockers (e.g., Tubocurarine, Mecamylamine).

A painful tongue may be an indication of an underlying serious medical condition and nearly always merits assessment by a physician or dental surgeon.
In itself, NSML is not a life-threatening diagnosis, most people diagnosed with the condition live normal lives. Obstructive cardiomyopathy and other pathologic findings involving the cardiovascular system may be a cause of death in those whose cardiac deformities are profound.
Bacterial, viral or fungal infections can cause glossitis. "Candida" species are involved in median rhomboid glossitis.
Syphilis is now relatively rare, but the tertiary stage can cause diffuse glossitis and atrophy of lingual papillae, termed "syphilitic glossitis", "luetic glossitis" or "atrophic glossitis of tertiary syphilis". It is caused by Treponema pallidum and is a sexually transmitted infection.
The reported incidence of constriction ring syndrome varies from 1/1200 and 1/15000 live births. The prevalence is equally in male and female.
Fetomaternal factors like prematurity, maternal illnes, low birth weight and maternal drug exposure are predisposing factors for the constriction ring syndrome.
No positive relationship between CRS and genetic inheritance has been reported.
Xanthoma disseminatum (also known as "Disseminated xanthosiderohistiocytosis" and "Montgomery syndrome") is a rare cutaneous condition that preferentially affects males in childhood, characterized by the insidious onset of small, yellow-red to brown papules and nodules that are discrete and disseminated.
It is a histiocytosis syndrome.
X-linked reticulate pigmentary disorder (also known as "familial cutaneous amyloidosis", "Partington amyloidosis", "Partington cutaneous amyloidosis", "Partington syndrome type II", "reticulate pigmentary disorder", and "X-linked reticulate pigmentary disorder with systemic manifestations") is a cutaneous condition that has been described in adult women that had linear streaks of hyperpigmentation and in which male patients manifested a reticulated mottled brown pigmentation of the skin, which, on biopsy, demonstrated dermal deposits of amyloid.
The syndrome is also referred with the acronym X-Linked-PDR or even XLPRD.It's a very rare disease, genetically determined, with a chronic course.
It was characterized in 1981. Mutation of the "POLA1" gene leads to loss of expression of the catalytic subunit of DNA polymerase-α and is responsible for XLPDR. Loss of POLA1 expression results in reduced levels of RNA:DNA hybrids in the cytosol and unexpectedly triggers aberrant immune responses (e.g. type I interferon production) which at least in part can account for the symptoms associated with XLPDR.
Erythrokeratodermia variabilis (also known as "erythrokeratodermia figurata variabilis", "keratosis extremitatum progrediens", "keratosis palmoplantaris transgrediens et progrediens", "Mendes da Costa syndrome", "Mendes da Costa type erythrokeratodermia", and "progressive symmetric erythrokeratoderma") is a rare autosomal dominant disorder that usually presents at birth or during the first year of life. To date, it is thought to be caused by mutations in genes encoding for connexin channels proteins in the epidermis, leading to the misregulation of homeostasis in keratinocytes.
One type is characterized by generalized, persistent, brown hyperkeratosis with accentuated skin markings, while a second type is localized, with involvement that is limited in extent and characterized by sharply demarcated, hyperkeratotic plaques.
It can be associated with GJB3 and GJB4.
It was characterized in 1925.
In the two predominant mutations of NSML (Y279C and T468M) the mutations cause a loss of catalytic activity of the SHP2 protein (the gene product of the "PTPN11" gene), which is a previously unrecognized behavior for this class of mutations. This interferes with growth factor and related signalling. While further research confirms this mechanism, additional research is needed to determine how this relates to all of the observed effects of NSML.
Gianotti-Crosti disease is a harmless and self-limiting condition, so no treatment may be required. Treatment is mainly focused on controlling itching, symptomatic relief and to avoid any further complications. For symptomatic relief from itching, oral antihistamines or any soothing lotions like calamine lotion or zinc oxide may be used. If there are any associated conditions like streptococcal infections, antibiotics may be required.
Affected males develop generalized reticular hyper pigmentation in early childhood.
Hair often looks bedraggled or brushed backwards, hanging low on the forehead.
Among the associated extracutaneous manifestations are described:
- Respiratory infections
- Dyskeratosis corneal photophobia
- Hypohidrosis with large deficit of thermoregulation
- Growth retardation
- Gastrointestinal disorders
- Kidney disease
- Kidney stones
- Urinary infections
- Webbed feet or hands
- Electrolyte imbalance
- Retinitis pigmentosa
- Lymphoedema
- Thyroid abnormalities
Each patient shows some of the symptoms listed above. Not every sick person will show all of the listed symptoms.
In females the disease is characterized by skin rashes linear hyper pigmentation following the Blaschko's lines, morphologically similar to stage 3 pigment incontinence. There are no systemic manifestations associated with XLPDR in females.
Café au lait spots can arise from diverse and unrelated causes:
- Having six or more café au lait spots greater than 5 mm in diameter before puberty, or greater than 15 mm in diameter after puberty, is a diagnostic feature of neurofibromatosis type I, but other features are required to diagnose NF-1.
- Familial multiple café au lait spots have been observed without NF-1 diagnosis.
- They can be caused by vitiligo in the rare McCune–Albright syndrome.

Miller syndrome is a genetic condition also known as the Genee–Wiedemann syndrome, Wildervanck–Smith syndrome, or postaxial acrofacial dystosis. The incidence of this condition is not known, but it is considered extremely rare. It is due to a mutation in the DHODH gene. Nothing is known of its pathogenesis.
An extremely rare disease of which only a few isolated cases are known.
Gianotti–Crosti syndrome ( ), also known as infantile papular acrodermatitis, papular acrodermatitis of childhood, and papulovesicular acrolocated syndrome, is a reaction of the skin to a viral infection. Hepatitis B virus and Epstein–Barr virus are the most frequently reported pathogens. Other incriminated viruses are hepatitis A virus, hepatitis C virus, cytomegalovirus, coxsackievirus, adenovirus, enterovirus, rotavirus, rubella virus, HIV, and parainfluenza virus.
It is named for Ferdinando Gianotti and Agostino Crosti.
The clinical course of BVVL can vary from one patient to another. There have been cases with progressive deterioration, deterioration followed by periods of stabilization, and deterioration with abrupt periods of increasing severity.
The syndrome has previously been considered to have a high mortality rate but the initial response of most patients to the Riboflavin protocol are very encouraging and seem to indicate a significantly improved life expectancy could be achievable. There are three documented cases of BVVL where the patient died within the first five years of the disease. On the contrary, most patients have survived more than 10 years after the onset of their first symptom, and several cases have survived 20–30 years after the onset of their first symptom.
Families with multiple cases of BVVL and, more generally, multiple cases of infantile progressive bulbar palsy can show variability in age of disease onset and survival. Dipti and Childs described such a situation in which a family had five children that had Infantile PBP. In this family, three siblings showed sensorineural deafness and other symptoms of BVVL at an older age. The other two siblings showed symptoms of Fazio-Londe disease and died before the age of two.
People with HPV-mediated oropharyngeal cancer tend to have higher survival rates. The prognosis for people with oropharyngeal cancer depends on the age and health of the person and the stage of the disease. It is important for people with oropharyngeal cancer to have follow-up exams for the rest of their lives, as cancer can occur in nearby areas. In addition, it is important to eliminate risk factors such as smoking and drinking alcohol, which increase the risk for second cancers.
Solitary mastocytoma may be present at birth or may develop during the first weeks of life, originating as a brown macule that urticates on stroking.
Schmitt Gillenwater Kelly syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant congenital disorder consisting of radial hypoplasia, triphalangeal thumbs, hypospadias, and maxillary diastema.
HID syndrome is also known as ichthyosis hystrix, Rheydt type after the German city of Rheydt near Düsseldorf where it was first discovered. Symptoms are bilateral hearing loss and spiky hyperkeratotic masses which cover the whole body though the palms and soles are less badly affected. It can be differentiated from KID syndrome which also has symptoms of deafness and ichthyosis by the different distribution of hyperkeratosis. It is an autosomal dominant condition caused by a mutation to the GJB2 gene (the same gene affected by KID syndrome).
